The Risks of DIY Electrics

Many people think installing new lights or plug sockets is easy, but DIY electrics pose significant dangers, making it the most hazardous DIY activity in the home. Attempting electrical work without proper qualifications is certainly not recommended.

For starters, new socket installations must adhere to the 18th edition BS 7671 wiring regulations. If installed incorrectly or incorrect wiring alterations are made, it can lead to overheating and fire hazards due to the cable overloading.

Compliance With Regulations

The number of sockets that can be added to existing circuits is limited, which means that additional measures like spurs should be implemented to control current flow through cabling. Kitchen and outdoor sockets must also comply with part P regulations, necessitating RCD protection and the appropriate IP rating for outdoor usage.
